I came across banana lumpia dessert while we were stationed in Hawaii. A friend had made it for a BBQ and I was instantly hooked!

Since apple bananas were not something I came across very often back home, this was a whole new deep fried dessert experience. One you should absolutely give a try making yourself.

Every once in a while I’ll now find apple bananas in our grocery store, and when I do, I always pick them up.

It’s the dessert my kids go crazy for! While telling them this deep fried dessert is waiting for them at home after a long day at school, the high pitch excitement is deafening.

BANANA LUMPIA RECIPE

Ingredients

  • 6 apple bananas (6 apple bananas make 12 banana lumpia)
  • 1 package lumpia wrapper
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • oil for frying (canola or vegetable)
  • confectionary sugar (optional topping)

In a pot add a few inches of oil and set to medium heat.

While the oil heats up, assemble your lumpia wraps.

You’ll find lumpia wrappers in the freezer secetion at the grocery store. Lumpia wrappers are very thin, so I like to buy the ones that are individually separated to help this process move faster.

In a shallow dish add 1 cup brown sugar and 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Set aside.

Peel and cut your apple bananas length wise.

Coat banana fully with sugar.

DEEP FRY LUMPIA

To test if your oil is hot enough, you can dip a wooden spoon into it. If a bunch bubbles begin to form around the spoon your oil is ready. If it begins to bubble very rapidly, your oil is to hot. Lower the temperature and allow it to cool down.

Using a tong, gently place lumpia into oil. Take caution to not splash oil when placing them in and taking them out. Fry in batches and flip halfway through for a more even golden color.

Once the lumpia is a deep golden color, use a tong and place on paper towel and plate. Continue with each batch.

WHERE CAN I FIND APPLE BANANAS AND LUMPIA WRAPPERS

Lumpia wrappers can be found in the freezer section at the grocery store. I like to buy the ones that are individually separated as they are very thin and sometimes heard to peel apart.

As for the apple bananas, you might be able to find them seasonally at your grocery store. If not head to your local oriental market where you’ll find both apple bananas and lumpia wrappers.

This dessert is absolutely delicious! It goes great with vanilla ice cream or even a drizzle of caramel sauce.

I hope you love them as much as my family does.
