"You don't want to miss this one. The recipe came with my electricity bill, probably some 39 years ago. I tried it and it was the best recipe for Sloppy Joes I have ever had. I've been making it ever since. Great taste and just the right amount of everything."

  1. The BEST sloppy joe recipe ever!!! It's not too tangy or sweet, and the flavors blend together perfectly for that old-time sloppy joe taste. The longer you cook it, the better it tastes too!I found this recipe on here quite a few years ago, and I've been making it ever since. It's awesome. It's that kind of sloppy joe you'd find at a church potluck, or at grandma's house. I've passed this recipe on to dozens of people, and I always share the story of it coming in with the electric bill!

  2. This recipe is perfect - because of family and friends with varying dietary restrictions, I made one batch with turkey and another with vegetarian crumbles (substitute for ground beef). Morningstar and Lightlife both work perfectly in this recipe as does turkey. Also love the convenience of fixing ahead of time and serving straight from the slow cooker dish - guests can serve themselves and have more than one option.

  3. I loved this recipe! I did make a substitution of a large jalapeno for the bell pepper, as I was out of bell pepper. I think it added a little heat that I liked a lot, so if I make this again, I'll do the same substitution. I made it on top of the stove, so added about 1/4 cup more water to handle the evaporation, plus the fact that I like my sloppy joes juicy. I also only cooked it for about 1 hour, as I didn't read the cook time before doing the preparation, and dinner was required to be on time. I'm sure the longer cooking would have mellowed everything out some, but it was very edible after 1 hour. This is a keeper!

  4. I reviewed this as MinnesotaMindi many years ago when it was recipezaar. I can't remember what my email was then, but I'm back in with my newer account, saying YUM!

  5. Really like this recipe. I added a good tbs. of Frank's Xtra Hot sauce for an added kick(no kids).

  2. I made these for dinner last night and everyone enjoyed them. I did not use a crock pot however since I did not have 3-5 hours. I did let the mixture simmer for about 1/2 an hour and then it sat for about 10 minutes while the french fries were cooking. The flavor was really good and I can see this recipe being even better with the longer cooking time. Since I was not using a crock pot I used a 1/2 cup tomato sauce instead of the water. I also added about 1/4 cup chili sauce. I will make this one again! thanks mimi!
