Table linens are a great way to set the tone for a meal. Table linens include tablecloths, place mats, napkins, and runners. They may be used for formal occasions, to elevate a holiday display, or to protect a table during everyday use, and they can be made from different fabrics and are available in a variety of sizes and colors. Choose table linens that match the décor of your house or that coordinate with the event you are celebrating.

Part 1

Part 1 of 3:

Measuring for Size

  1. 1

Measure your table. Use a tape measure to determine the length and width of your table (or the diameter if you have a round table), as well as the height. [1] Write down the measurements so you can take them with you when you shop for linens.

  2. 2

Decide on the drop of your tablecloth. This is how far you want the linen to fall from the edge of your table. For casual dining, the recommended drop is about 6 to 9 inches (15 to 23cm), while 15 to 18 inches (38 to 46cm) is appropriate for a formal occasion. [2] If you are decorating a buffet table, it’s best to have floor-length drop.

  3. 3

Determine the size of your tablecloth. To make sure you have the right size tablecloth, use the measurements of your table, then multiply the desired drop by 2 and add it to the appropriate measurement. [3]

  4. 4

Choose a tablecloth and placemats for an informal dinner. A family setting doesn’t require as elaborate a selection of table linens, but a few touches can make the whole meal seem more pulled together. [4]

    • While people don't use linens as often as they used to, they can be a nice way to add a pretty touch to your family dinners and holidays.[5]
  5. 5

Go all the way for weddings or formal parties. When hosting a special occasion, you should include a tablecloth, linen napkins, placemats, table runners, and possibly even chair covers. [6]

  6. 6

Select napkin sizes based on your event. Dinner napkins are traditionally 24 inches (61cm), lunch napkins are 14 to 16 inches (36 to 41cm), and co*cktail napkins are 6 inches (15cm).

Part 2 of 3:

Selecting the Material

  1. 1

Decide if you want a formal table or an informal table. The formality of your table linens will depend on whether you are planning a special event or if your table linens are for every day.

  2. 2

Choose linen or cotton for everyday use. These fabrics are soft, durable, and easy to care for. They are also usually more affordable than some of the more luxurious fabrics. [7]

  3. 3

Avoid synthetic fabrics. Blends like polyester and vinyl are less expensive, but they are also less durable and are not as soft as linen and cotton. A vinyl tablecloth, for instance, is easy to clean, but it looks very cheap. It might be appropriate for a backyard barbecue, but it is not a good choice for a more formal occasion. [8]

  4. 4

Choose luxe fabrics for formal occasions. Popular options for upscale events include damask, organza, silk, satin, or taffeta. While you will probably pay more for these materials, they will help create a sense of drama and elegance for your event. [9]

Part 3

Part 3 of 3:

Choosing the Style

  1. 1

Gather paint samples and fabric swatches. Matching your table linens to the décor of the room helps create a tasteful, unified appearance. Get a paint sample from your walls and swatches from your furniture so you can match the colors and patterns appropriately while you shop.

  2. 2

Match linens to tablecloth for formal events. When you are arranging place settings for a formal occasion, the napkins and other linens should coordinate with the tablecloth, either in the same color or a complimentary contrasting hue. Patterns should be subtle and should not draw attention away from the tableware. [10]

  3. 3

Mix and match colors and patterns for informal tables. Experiment with different china styles, colorful napkins, and fun patterns to make a family dinner table feel more warm and inviting.

  4. 4

Go with a simple texture for informal dinners. The rough texture of natural linen or a buttery natural cotton can help create a relaxed, casual feel at a family table. They also coordinate with dishes popular in a family setting, such as stoneware, pewter, and pottery. [11]

  5. 5

Choose a luxurious texture for formal dinners. Texture can create visual interest, even if you choose a solid color for all of your linens. Although smooth textures are typically preferred for formal occasions, an intricate damask may also be appropriate.[12]

  6. 6

Shop around. As with any purchase, it’s important to consider several different options before you decide on the one that’s right for you. Take your table measurements, paint samples, and fabric swatches with you, and consider visiting more than one store before you purchase anything. Ask the sales associates about the quality of the options available, and compare different fabrics, brands, and colors before making your final decision.

    Expert Answer

People aren't using linens as often as they were anymore, but linen placemat holders and napkins are still popular. I think that just makes it a little more special when you're having dinner.

      Tips

      • Remember that your table linens will be subjected to food and drinks. You might want to look for a fabric that can be easily cleaned if you are expecting to continue using your linens over and over again.
